Fly into Srinigar from New Delhi on any number of airlines including Spice Jet (www.spicejet.com), Jet Airways (www.jetairways.com), Kingfisher (www.flykingfisher.com), Air Deccan (www.airdeccan.net) and Air India (www.airindia.com). Buying a ticket on these airlines can be difficult outside of India – Spice Jet and Air India (and possibly Jet) take overseas credit cards but at time of writing the others don’t.
You can also brave the bus from New Delhi to Srinigar. Depending on road conditions this runs daily and takes at least 25 hours. The road goes over a high mountain pass and is often closed for days at a time during winter. Only consider it if you have plenty of time. It costs about $20.
Once in Srinigar get a pre-paid taxi from the airport all the way to Gulmarg. This takes between 1 ½ and 2 ½ hours depending on the road, and costs about $30. Don’t even try to get the public transport up there with all your ski gear. |
