Gulmarg is India’s only worthwhile ski resort and its gondola offers unparalleled access to the Himalayan backcountry. Essentially, Gulmarg is a small village of hotels and restaurants at the base of a ridge which rises from 2700m up to 4300 m and offers a huge amount of terrain, with 15 distinct bowls and runs down to almost 2000m. The gondola goes to 4000m and from there you can reach all 15 bowls with an easy traverse or short skin. Only 1 bowl is in-bounds so Gulmarg is essentially a backcountry ski hill in the style of La Grave. There is more then just this ridge however, with classic descents on mountains rising above 4500m stretching away to the South and West, all within a day tour from the gondola.

Gulmarg itself has a wide variety of hotels and restaurants and a ski shop which is easily the best equipped in India. There are a couple of professional guides operating also, but as of 2007 no guide book. Gulmarg makes a comfortable base for explorations of this area, although being a ski hill (and one becoming justifiably more famous) there are quite a few foreigners around and prices are a bit higher then elsewhere in the Himalayas, but still very reasonable. The terrain is so vast that skier numbers would have to increase exponentially for the backcountry to get busy. There are a couple of good informational sites for Gulmarg - www.kashmiralpine.com/ run by a group of locals and www.thelineofcontrol.com produced by a Norwegian journalist and ski bum about his winter in Kashmir.
