Asahidake is one of the most popular touring locations in Hokkaido, due to the easy access to above tree line terrain given by the Gondola at the bottom of the volcano (top height 1600m) and the fame of the mountain itself, which at 2290 m is the highest in Hokkaido. Despite this, the touring is average, with some very good runs in spring from the peak, but in general a lack of variety and very few good poor weather options. The terrain is mostly intermediate, and its biggest attraction is in the spring on a clear day, making the most of the vertical afforded and the amazing, 360 degree views from the summit.
A must do if you are visiting from March onwards, but if you are planning a mid winter trip don’t count on too many days here. Shocking weather and poor vis in the alpine are often the case, limiting options, although the ski hill may keep you happy for a day or two. There are plenty of hotels at the base of the gondola, and transport is easy to arrange from Asahikawa. Two English speaking guides operate here also. |
