Morocco is not the first place you think of when planning a backcountry adventure, but it should be part of your options if you are already in Europe and are looking for a very different ski touring experience. The Atlas mountains offer a completely unique touring trip. Big mountains, centered around Mt Toubkal (4165m), dotted with tiny villages built of stone and mud and accessible only by donkey, allow good access to serious terrain while also giving you a taste of Moroccan mountain culture.
The down side is the inconsistency of the snow, although as they are so high there is always skiing to be had in winter, and the logistical hassles of getting all your gear up there – be prepared for much haggling with and some pestering and badgering from the locals, especially before you get right into the mountains. But unique scenery, challenging touring and a heavy dose of culture make it worthwhile. |
