General
Morocco is not the first place you think of when planning a backcountry adventure, but it should be part of your options if you are already in Europe and are looking for a very different ski touring experience. The Atlas mountains offer a completely unique touring trip. Big mountains, centered around Mt Toubkal (4165m), dotted with tiny villages built of stone and mud and accessible only by donkey, allow good access to serious terrain while also giving you a taste of Moroccan mountain culture.

The down side is the inconsistency of the snow, although as they are so high there is always skiing to be had in winter, and the logistical hassles of getting all your gear up there – be prepared for much haggling with and some pestering and badgering from the locals, especially before you get right into the mountains. But unique scenery, challenging touring and a heavy dose of culture make it worthwhile.

Snow
Not a lot, and can be erratic, but the altitude holds what falls. Don’t come to Morocco looking from champagne, especially as late winter/early spring is the usual season for exploring here, when the snow pack is at its deepest.

Weather
Lots of clear weather, with a few big storms in between. Cool up high, but never super cold and generally mild for these sorts of altitudes.

Terrain
All alpine. There are plenty of unskiable lines and caution is always needed – plenty of big cliffs and unseen rocks around, which combined with the variable snow can make things challenging. Descents up to 1500m possible in winter, although in spring expect 1000m as the max. No glaciers.

Getting there
Marrakech has to be one of the best, and most unlikely, ski touring bases in the world. In sight of the Atlas Mountains, it is justifiably famous among travelers as a fantastic city. What’s better is that it will not be over touristy in the winter, although come spring things can get very busy.
morocco
Has everything for the backpacker but nothing for the ski tourer – bring everything you need for repairs etc from home. Cheap flights to Marrakech can be bought from Europe, and transport from there to the mountains is easy in either bus or taxi.
